Market Report 9th Mar ‘17 – 23rd Mar ‘17

Hello and welcome to the latest market report. Apologies for the delay between this edition and the last but the extended break does mean that we have plenty to tell you about this week.

Vegetables
The weather in Spain has finally improved meaning increased availability of Courgettes, Aubergines and various salad items. Quality is better than it has been for a number of weeks and prices are slowly coming down. The first fresh Spanish Peas and Broad Beans are in stock and Wild Garlic is also back in season. We also have some beautiful Morel and Cepes mushrooms, both fresh and dried but we can only offer limited quantities for the time being. South American Asparagus is plentiful and good value for money. Purple Broccoli is also excellent quality at the moment and readily available.

Best Buys
Asparagus, Purple Broccoli, Heritage Carrots, UK Cauliflower, Green Courgettes, Leeks & Chantenay Carrots.

Salads
Bok Choy is finally back to a reasonable price after a difficult few weeks.
Red Watercress is in season and Watermelon Radish is available again. Roquette was badly affected by poor weather in Italy but has thankfully returned to normal.
Lastly, we expect the supply of Tarragon to stabilise in the next two to three weeks. It too has been disrupted by poor weather and takes longer than other herbs to grow.

Best Buys
Curly Kale, Little Gem Lettuce, Watercress, Golden Beetroot & Candy Beetroot.

Fruits
The first South African Golden Plums are arriving in the market and look and taste great.
UK forced Rhubarb is in full swing but sadly Lychees are coming to an end.

Comice Pears are finishing and we are moving to the Williams variety.
The Brazilian season for melons is over and we are currently waiting for a new crop to arrive from both Panama and Costa Rica. Unfortunately, this means that Watermelons are in particularly short supply and the price as gone up as a result.
In better news Blood Oranges are in full swing and taste great. Similarly all Spanish berries are excellent quality at the moment. Finally, Clementines are unavailable and have been replaced by Nadorcotts.

Best Buys
Blood Oranges, Blueberries, Red Plums & UK Rhubarb.

That’s it for this week folks. Thanks for reading!

We would like to remind everyone that we also supply an extensive range of dried goods and dairy products.
