Hello and welcome to the latest market report.
We hope you’ve had a wonderful summer. Apologies for the delay between this report and the last but it does mean we have a bumper issue for you with plenty of delicious produce to tell you about.
Vegetables
The severe cold snap at the beginning of the year followed by one of the hottest summers on record has made for extremely difficult Potato growing conditions. As a result quality has been adversely affected and the price is much higher than usual. Frozen products have also been affected with McCain chips up 20%.
Both Purple Broccoli and Baby Peppers have started to arrive on the market but supply is limited at the moment.
Mixed colour Chantenay Carrots and UK grown Brussels Sprouts are both back in season.
Due to the Dutch season being in short supply the price of Tomatoes has gone up slightly. Cucumbers, Aubergines and Peppers have all been affected by the same issue.
High demand coupled with limited supply has pushed the price of Cauliflowers up.
Lastly, Roscoff Onions are back in season.
Best Buys: UK Savoy Cabbage, Spring Green Cabbage, UK Parsnips & Mixed Colour Chantenay Carrots
Salads
UK Runner Beans and Tender Stem Broccoli are in full swing now. Both are great quality and value.
All Herbs, Mange Tout and Sugar Snaps are also looking good at the moment.
Best Buys: Cos Lettuce, Baby Gem Lettuce, Chinese Leaf Lettuce, Watercress & Tender Stem Broccoli
Fruits
Apples are getting back to normal with quality improving and the price coming down.
The season for Spanish Melons is coming to an end and our stock will soon be from South America. This may result in a slight price increase due to the air freight cost involved.
Air freight Pomelo is also available.
We would recommended avoiding Peaches and Nectarines for the time being as the Spanish season is ending and quality will be affected.
Gooseberries have finished as have European Cherries. Our Cherry stock is now from the USA and while quality is good they are very expensive.
Egyptian Oranges have also come to an end and we are now working a South African new crop.
Finally, the first UK Windsor and Russet apples are now on the market. The quality is great and while the price is high at the moment we expect to see that come down in the coming weeks.
Best Buys: Royal Gala Apple, Blueberry, Mango & Raspberry
