Hello and welcome to the first market report of 2017!
Happy New Year to you all.
We hope you’re feeling refreshed after the festive period and ready for another jam packed edition.
Blood Oranges / Fresh Lychees / A flooded field
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Producers in south eastern Spain are counting the cost of last month’s heavy rains and flooding that left hundreds of thousands of hectares under water and seriously disrupted exports at one of the busiest times of the year. The downpours – the worst the region has experienced in a generation – left several people dead and washed away entire farms, causing major damage to infrastructure. Citrus and leafy vegetables are among the worst hit crops but Kaki, vegetable and Grape harvests have all been severely affected.
Vegetables
It’s predicted that excessive humidity will result in poor quality Broccoli, Cauliflower and Courgette crops and we have already seen export volumes and prices adversely affected.
Best Buys: Mixed Heritage Carrots, UK Kale, Banana Shallots, Parsnips & Swede
Salads
UK Rainbow Chard has finished for the time being and we are now stocking new season Italian which is great quality but more expensive due to the distance it’s travelled to get here.
All Spanish grown salad items have been affected by the sheer volume of rainfall in the country. Some areas have experienced six months worth in just three days!
Best Buys: Extra Small Mids, Round Lettuce, UK Watercress & Heritage Tomatoes
Fruits
Apricots are back in season. They look and taste great at the moment and are good value for money too.
Beautiful Blood Oranges are in full swing and if you’re in the mood for making Marmalade we have Seville Oranges too. Get them while you can we anticipate a shorter than usual season.
Sticking with Oranges we are also able to offer an Egyptian grown crop which means we don’t have to rely solely on produce from Spain which may be unreliable following the heavy rainfall they’ve suffered.
Spanish Strawberries and Raspberries have not been affected by the wet weather and we have plenty in stock. Lychees are back in season and great quality and Nadorcotts have started again.
UK Apples are still available. Choose from Cox, Royal Gala, Braeburn and Russets.
Best Buys: UK Royal Gala Apples, Blueberries, Clementines, Lychees & Comice Pears.
That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading. See you next time.
We would like to remind everyone that we also supply an extensive range of dried goods and dairy products.
