Market Report 18th October - 31st October
Welcome to this week’s Market Report. With October 31st just a couple of weeks away we have everything you need to make the most of Halloween.
Starting with Vegetables
UK Pumpkins in all sizes are now readily available. We also have Toffee Apples and Chocolate Apples in stock as well as Fresh Chestnuts. Please give us as much notice as possible if you require large amounts of any of these items.
Vegetables the season for UK Courgette is finishing and we are moving to Spanish which is slightly more expensive but better quality.
UK Brussel Sprouts are in full swing and we also have Brussel Tops and Stalks arriving.
Both Round and Banana Shallots have come down in price due to the arrival of the Spanish and French season. Our Aubergines are also now Spanish and this means better quality and value.
This week Best Buys include: Aubergine, UK Broccoli, Courgette, UK Cauliflower and UK Onion.
Moving onto Fruits; - ALL EUROPEAN
Peaches have now finished and we can only supply South African but they are very expensive and there is limited availability. Comice Pears, both UK and Dutch, are in full swing and Brazilian Melons have come down in price slightly. English Apples including Royal Gala, Cox, Russet, Braeburn and Kanzi are all good quality and readily available. Custard Apples are also arriving in the market. Finally, Golden Plums are coming to an end but the quality of our Satsuma’s has improved.
This week the Best Buys include: UK Apples, Figs, Williams Pears, Plums, Grapefruit and UK Raspberries.
Salads:
Castlefranco Radicchio and Tardivo (a member of the chicory family) are both arriving in the market but are very expensive. UK Little Gem and Spring Onions are coming to an end and we are moving to Spanish and Egyptian varieties respectively. The Dutch season for Cucumbers and Tomatoes is also finishing and we are moving to Spanish but the abnormally warm weather over there may see a restricted supply and sudden price rises.
This week the Best Buys include all UK Iceberg, Spring Onion, UK Cos, UK Watercress and UK Chinese Leaf.
